College Prep Systems

College expects incoming freshmen to know many things: math, science, history, how to read and write well. That is the visible curriculum. However, there is a hidden curriculum that is integral to a student’s success. Colleges expect their incoming first year students to already have mastered a set of executive function skills, including:

  • Staying focused

  • Holding information in your mind

  • Getting started in tasks (initiating)

  • Breaking down steps into parts and following through to completion

  • Physically organizing your spaces and your materials

  • Regulating your emotions

  • Controlling your impulses

If your student struggles with these skills, no matter how smart they are, how good they are at school, how much they want to be there and learn, they will struggle in college. That’s what I designed College Prep Systems to provide.

What is College Prep Systems?

College Prep Systems is a four week workshop in July. We will meet once per week on Mondays. Every session is focused on building these core skills that all tie in together. It’s a small cohort that I lead in real time. It’s tailored for each and every person in the workshop, and parents also get a debrief after each session. This isn’t tutoring or college application help; this is for the transition from high school to college. It teaches the students how to help themselves and build these critical core skills that they will use throughout their lives.

The Schedule

Each session is crafted to build on the week before it. We start with understanding how each individual takes in information and evaluate their specific strengths and gaps. Then we spend the following three weeks building the core skills to succeed, tailored to each group member and learning from each other.

Session 1: July 6

Your Executive Skills Profile

In this first session, your student will learn exactly what they’re already strongest in and what they need to work on. This way we tailor the following systems they develop to their specific needs.

Session 11: July 13

A Planning System Designed For Your Brain

The second session is designed to help your student create a planning system that works for them, tailored completely for their needs and preferences.

Session 111: July 20

Your Individual Launch Code

The third session is focused on task initiation and emotional regulation. Having the pieces is the foundation, but the skills to execute are something entirely different and equally necessary. This session will help them develop their unique methods to execute.

Session 1v: July 27

Putting It All Together

The last session is the glue: your student will take everything they learned and make a plan to be ready for the hidden curriculum demands of college, including the tactics to help them independently advocate successfully for themselves.

Logistics

We’ll meet on Mondays, July 6, 13, 20, and 27, from 7-8pm ET. It’s live on Google Meet and there only a few students per cohort: 6-8.

Pricing

Each student is $1,233. However, the founding cohort is $822 per student (including processing fee). The founding-cohort rate is this summer only. Standard rate begins September 1.

FAQ

Q: What if my student misses a session?

A: I know that parents and their kids have busy schedules. I’ll send the student a recording and a recap of the session. The following week, they can ask any questions they might have from the missed session. However, missing more than one session significantly decreases the strength of the workshop.

Q: Is this for students with ADHD?

A: I designed this course, so this works very well with students that have ADHD. But your student does not need to have ADHD for this to be helpful; everything is made to fit your student.

Q: How is this different from a study skills class?

A: Study skills are manifestations of executive functioning skills. I teach the foundational skills to succeed in college. Study skills can’t form until executive functioning skills do.

Q: What’s the refund policy?

A: Due to the customization and personal attention each member receives, refunds cannot be considered.
